Lipstick can be quite intimidating… I went years without wearing it and then would only dare brave a colour on nights out. When shopping for lipstick it’s important to know what you’re looking for so you feel comfortable when wearing it. If you’re just starting out, leave the bold, bright colours for later and focus on neutral, nude shades.
Matte, Satin or Gloss?
I think it’s all down to personal preference. I’ve never been a lover of gloss, but only because I feel like it emphasises the size of my lips and teeth, on other people, I think it looks great. I seem to be obsessed with matte lipsticks, and I have dry lips! Don’t let dry lips put you off matte lip products because there are some that work wonders and my lips can be dreadful.
Deciding on the perfect lip product can be a difficult task, everyone is different, so remember, colours that good on your friends may look completely different on you. For example, one of my friends look gorgeous in coral, but it doesn’t suit me at all. Always match the shade against your skin tone before deciding on if the lipstick is the right one for you, and never go lighter than your skin tone. For example, your nude shades should always be darker.
- Always use shades that compliment your skin tone
- Exfoliate before application (I recommend LUSH Bubblegum Lip Scrub)
- Never go outside the lip line
- Upkeep is necessary (nothing looks worse than faded patchy lipstick)
- Always carry a mirror to check lips and teeth
If you follow these rules, you should rock your lipstick look!
My swear by lip products are MAC Cosmetics Matte Lipstick and LANCOME Matte Shaker. These two products feed my matte addiction and are perfect for my dry lips. My everyday colour is either Velvet Teddy or Whirl and for on a more bold, evening look, I love Red’y in 5 by LANCOME.
